WIMSA

Women in Media SA (WIMSA) 2023 update.

Following along from the 2019 http://angrypenguin.blogspot.com/2019/ post which records the progress of WIMSA. Despite the rapid and extensive changes of WIM as a national entity, its South Australian body remains, in its way, doggedly autonomous.

This posting goes by way of a catch-up scrapbook since we have lost our official record as kept on Facebook. The national WIM has done a culling restructure. As WIMSA convenor, I think it is important that a record be kept. Imperfect it may be, but it is a good reminder for us and, let's face it, history matters.

WIMSA has continued to have events large and small, always championed by beaut flyers. This an old Christmas drinks flyer.

And here are some of us at that very event at the salubrious East End Cellars.
Arna Eyers-White, Margaret Lehmann, Kara Jung, Collette Snowden, Samela Harris, Margie Budich and Megan Lloyd.

We try to keep the Christmas drinks tradition alive.
Next time it was in the delightful bar and bistro called Plain Jane upstairs at Leigh Street in the city.
Just a committee happy snap. We try to make a point of these.
Laila Ferrier, Kara Jung,Catherine Zengerer, Collette Snowden, Arna Eyers-White and Kate Hannon.

Of course, serious issues reign high for WIMSA and, most importantly those affecting women in politics and society. To this end we hosted a very sobering panel event at UniSA (which has solidaly sponsosred us with venues and tech throughout).
Politics, Promises, Progress involved committee member Kara Jung of "The Advertiser" with a panel of politicians, outspoken SA Best MP,  Connie Bonaros, SA Attorney General, Kyam Maher, former Attorney General Vickie Chapman and progressive candidate and former DPP  Stephen Pallaras.
The subject of #metoo rose high in a fiesty, enlightened night.

Betwixt and between, WIMSA signals major movements in social media campaigns, here it is Equal Pay Day - a committee shot.

Our committee has expanded but with that we're all rather stretched working girls with families, it is hard to rally everyone to the same place at the same time every time. However, whenever how many of us can get together for the monthly meeting, there is always cheese.

We have been honoured by some fabulous sponsors.
Wakefield Press has been consistently generous in supplying an elegance of quality books, art books, non-ficition, fiction, the very latest, you-name-it since our inception. They provide thankyou for our speakers and raffle prizes for our guests.
Olivers Taranga Wines have kept us and our audiences elegantly lubricated. They're a class act.
And Naomi Giatis of NGD designs has oft blessed us with her apt and insightful poster and flyer designs.
UniSA has been a staunch home for many events and we are proud to identify with it. A sterling tertiary institution with journalism among its flagship courses.

As covid headed towards our world, we decided to bone up with a visit by a nurse. OK. I lie. We decided to have a laugh and a bonding event at the most fabulous nightclub in town - driller Jet Armstrong's SUGAR . Nurse Georgie did the honours and kept the room laughing. It was a large networking turnout and cocktails went down a treat along with driller music, disco lights and LaCatering canapes.
Here's the committee - Arna, Laila, Kate, Sa head to head with Katie Spain, Collette at the rear and Kara and Megan at right.

A really controversial play about a remarkable woman caught our attention so we did our best to get the word around, despite the loss of our usual social media outlets.
The WIMSA theatre outing to Holden Street Theatres for the production of Looped, which portrayed Tallulah Bankhead at loggerheads with the cinema recording studios of her era. A clever serious and also witty play with award-worthy performances.
We gathered laid on a supper.

Back to the serious business of women's business, we mounted an event aimed at helping women to stand up for themselves when fronting employment. Back to UniSA and the Hawke Centre and, against the seasonal odds, we scored a wonderful and appreciative audience.

And the traditional working committee shot, minus Michelle who was on the panel.

WIMSA now brags a large and diverse committee - Samela Harris (convenor), Arna Eyers-White, Collette Snowden, Louise Pascale, Katie Spain, Kara Jung, Laila Ferrier with, newer members being  Jess Haynes, Michelle Wakim, Samoda Silva,  and Peta Doherty. The wonderful Kate Hannon has retired.
